The Midland's Great Western Railway line - Mullingar to Athlone
The Greenway between Mullingar and Athlone is a 42KM track built on the original Midlands Great Western railway which was part of the Dublin to Galway line.
It's entirely tarmac and considering it is built on the railway bed it's mainly flat the whole journey making it an easy cruise when compared to other greenways.
The history of the dates back to 1850 when the line first opened, serving Dublin to Athlone but closed in 1987. The line was left abandoned until the greenway was opened up in 2015 and work continues to bring the line even deeper into Athlone, currently ending before the railway station in the town.
